The church stands on the site of the custom toll booth, from which this religious building took its name. From here, like from a natural terrace, you can admire almost _the whole Trasimeno Lake and both its three islands, Polvese, Maggiore and Minore and,
from right to left, the small towns Passignano, Tuoro and Castiglione del Lago.
Looking ahead, you can see the bordering Tuscan territory that is the hills behind Arezzo, the Valdichiana flat land and Montepulciano.
The seventeenth-century church was built to remind a miraculous event operated
by a picture of the Madonna inside a small chapel; subsequently it was incorporated into the altar. In the building finds location the Museum of ancient vestments and sacred furnishings, a collection coming from the churches of Panicale.
This tour is based on the theme of water, from that of Lake Trasimeno to that of the ancient wash houses for doing laundry, visible from the opposite side of the road. We will be guided by the water of the small fountains up to the main fountain in center of the square, through the streets and squares of Panicale, discovering its history.
