Tavernelle is the largest and most populous town in the municipality of Panicale.
It developed largely thanks to its advantageous location at the bottom of the valley. The town’s recent growth was in large part constituted by the burgeoning building trade and new residential quarters lining both sides of the via Pievaiola, continuing up into the hills to the north of the river Nestore.
There was a hospital dedicated to looking after the poor in the old centre. The hospital, founded in 1490, was served by the small Santissima Annunziata church.
