The Santa Maria della Querciolana church is situated about one kilometre from Panicale, on the road that used to lead to Mongiovino castle. Visits can be organised by arrangement with the owners of La Querciolana farm. It was originally a small shrine by the roadside where “a miraculous image of the blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a young girl on the trunk of an oak tree [or “quercia”], which together with the nearby Rana spring gave the church its original name, Querciorana” (Corinzio Corsetti, 1626).
