The sanctuary is a modern building on the slopes of the hills to the south of the Nestore valley, overlooking Tavernelle.
The Grondici church – from “gronda” meaning roof – was one of the ‘respite’ sanctuaries. According to medieval theology, children who had not been baptised were destined to spend eternity in limbo, and had no right to be buried in sacred ground: their bodies were buried next to their homes, a practice referred to as “sub grunda”.
