Originally there was a votive niche called ‘Madonna del Cappelletto’, the church was built later and included the niche. The building was called ‘Beata Maria del Popolo’ but nowadays is known as ‘Madonna del Popolino’.
Wanted by the worshippers, the building was built to protect the disembarkation towards Tuscany, a swampy area that later was reclaimed creating the lake of Chiusi and Montepulciano.
