In the small town of Castiglion Fosco, do not miss the Church of Santa Croce, a real treasure trove of art that deserves to be visited. Located next to the ancient medieval cistern, it was built between the end of the twelfth and the beginning of the thirteenth century. The most interesting work is a polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna and Child: 135 cm high, from the Umbrian school, datable to the end of the 14th century, it was stolen in 1982 and only a lucky coincidence has allowed it to be traced in 2006.
The story of this Madonna, built in a single log of wood, with a deep look that makes it look more like Byzantine than Christian iconography, does not end here: after its discovery, looking in the rectory for the necessary documentation to certify its ownership, an ancient organ was found in a closet which turned out to be the first organ built by Maestro Angelo Morettini in 1882.
In 2008, digging a niche, to find a suitable location for the statue, there were those who shouted a miracle again: hidden by the plaster a beautiful 16th century fresco was unearthed, depicting the Madonna and Child among the Saints, attributed to the school of Perugino.
