The town, placed on the top of a hill, overlooks the Pian di Carpine and the Pian della Caina. Probably the word “Castelvieto”, that is to say “Castrum Vetus”, has a roman origin.

The history of the castle is related to the violent military endeavours of Braccio Fortebraccio from Montone, who occupied the castle in 1398 and 1415.
The events linked to the birth of the community of Castelvieto are quite complicated and characterized by aggressive building unrest.
