Montalera Castle

Montalera Castle

Village / castle

A mighty manor built starting from the 12th century and belonging, among others, to Biordo Michelotti, as well as to the Oddi and Baglioni families, the castle stands on the top of an isolated hill in a panoramic position between the waters of the Trasimeno and the Tresa stream.
The high walls describe a perimeter, of hexagonal shape, of over 300 meters and include a keep and a sturdy tower. The complex is graced by a splendid garden with fountains, trees and flower beds. Some rooms remain of the Renaissance residence within the fortified walls.
In the early Middle Ages, Montalera became part of the defensive system of the castles that controlled the borders of the Lombard Duchy of Chiusi, then passing under the control of Perugia, when this began its policy of expansion towards the lake.

The castle is privately owned.
