Gaiche is isolated in the green, along the road that connects Pietrafitta with Collebaldo. Famous above all for the Statute of 1318, the oldest in Umbria (which therefore makes it the oldest of the Umbrian castles that have survived to the present day), and for being the birthplace of Blessed Leopoldo in 1732, the castle preserves part of the walls, interrupted by a single door to the south-east, framed by blocks of sandstone, and the four perimeter towers, one of which has been renovated and used as a civic tower. The old mill and the various rooms of the castle have been renovated and transformed into houses for tourist use, while retaining the ancient medieval atmosphere.
The name of the toponym could derive from an alteration of the term Gaite in Gaytus, a Saracen voice which means ‘captain’, commander who defended and commanded it. Another hypothesis suggests the origin from the god Glauco, much venerated in the Trasimeno area.
