House of the Captain of the People or of the Ancient Clock – Isola Maggiore

Historical place Museum / place of art

The “Casa del Capitano del Popolo” was the summer residence of those who exercised the office of Captain of the People in the municipality of Perugia.
Built in sandstone, it shows evident Gothic characters (especially in the two mullioned windows of the façade) which date it back to the fourteenth century, while the clock was added in the second half of the eighteenth century, when the documents refer to an employee of the maintenance of the same.

Recently restored, it now houses a Documentation Center on the history of the island, which is essential for having an overview of the economic, social and artistic reality of this community. The exhibition rooms are divided into thematic groups; in the basement there are some processional banners which testify to the fervent religiosity of the inhabitants; on the entrance floor you can see panels and graphic reconstructions that illustrate the economic life of the island and its main source of wealth, namely fishing; Finally, on the first floor, aspects concerning the main works of art found in churches are explored, including a polyptych and a wooden crucifix from the end of the 15th century.
