The first news about the church of Santa Maria della Cerqua (or Quercia) dates back to around 1420, when it became a parish church for the convenience of the inhabitants of Isola Polvese, otherwise forced to go to the church of San Secondo, far from the village. Inside, according to a document of 1432, there was an altar dedicated to Santa Maria belonging to the Confraternity of the Gonfalone; this banner had been painted by Pietro Perugino or by a representative of his school.
A topographic map, the “Charter of the processions”, drawn in 1805, contains the words “demolished parish church”. Currently, only the bell tower remains standing, well hidden among the vegetation.
