The Zocco Castle stands on the crest of a hill planted with olive trees and dominates Lake Trasimeno from above. Over the centuries, it represented the most powerful military settlement in the area, having seven towers, three gates and a mighty city wall. It was built in 1274 and has the name of Zocco probably for its shape, very similar to a “horse’s hoof” (‘zoccolo’).
Of particular interest is its church of San Macario, on whose walls you could read an ancient Latin inscription alongside a painting depicting a lady.
The current state of the castle is unfortunately that of ruins.
