The Porta perugina entrance was rebuilt in 1898. It opens onto an internal courtyard called Piazza Umberto I. This was the town’s old piazza, where the market was held. When the walls were rebuilt at the end of the XIII century the town expanded to include the piazza within the fortified walls.
In the centre of the piazza there is a fountain with the town coat of arms and two griffins rampant holding up a shield. Number 6, where the Palazzo Pretorio used to be, has Panicale’s coat of arms and Perugia’s Griffin and Lion sculpted into its facade.
