Castle of the Knights of Malta

Castle of the Knights of Malta

Historical place Village / castle Wine

Built by the Jerusalemites in the XIII century as a hospitium for pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena, the palace was transformed into a fortress in the XV century. With a square plan, inside it has a beautiful courtyard with three superimposed arcades. In addition to the residential part (with the houses of the religious, the refectory and the kitchens), the complex also included a chapel dedicated to San Giovanni Battista.
Over the centuries, popes, sovereigns and other illustrious personalities have resided in the castle.
To date, it belongs to the Knights of Malta and houses one of the cellars of the Strada del Vino Colli del Trasimeno, the local Wine Route.
